Native American Dolls

Corn is one of the traditional Three Sister foods of the Anishinabe, and one of the first foods of the Native peoples. It is something that has nearly always been a part of the lives of Native Americans regardless of tribal affiliation. It goes to say that Native children then have always had a corn husk toy.

There are many versions of the legend of the corn husk doll but the moral lesson is the same. Many years ago there was a beautiful but vain corn husk doll and as a result of her vanity her face was taken away. Many Native artisans refrain from putting faces on their corn husk dolls because of these legends. Despite the reasons or perhaps because of the reasons, a faceless corn husk doll can be a thing of beauty to children young and old.
